St. Luke CDF Freedom School
This brainchild of CDF is a six week summer enrichment program where children ages 5-13 participate in learning and cultural enrichment activities 8 hours a day, 5 days a week to advance their academic and developmental needs. As a national program of the Children’s Defense Fund, we focus on five essential components: (1) Academic Enrichment, (2) Parent Involvement, (3) Civic Engagement and Social Action, (4) Leadership Development, and (5) Health and Wellness. It also provides job and community service opportunities for our Servant Leader Interns, who serve as classroom teachers and role models to our participating children – a hands-on service learning experience designed to cultivate the next generation of educators and leaders in Paterson.
This initiative is free to the students who will participate, and must be totally supported by the host organization. As you are well aware, St. Luke is committed to providing such relevant community initiatives to help uplift and assist in the renewal of this community.
Through our emphasis on literacy, parental involvement, and social action The St. Luke Community Development Center CDF Freedom Schools® anticipates results in student engagement, character development, and family and community involvement in education. Funds are used to cover costs for student textbooks and curriculum materials, college scholarships for our youth leaders, staff leadership development, and program operations. This summer program usually serves about 50 students in grades 5-8 to make a difference in the lives of students, families, and communities locally and by extension, our country and the world.
